Modeling User Experiences

Modeling User Experiences
Feb 23rd, 2010

This is a bit of an older presentation (from June 4th, 2009) but it has some very good points related to user experience design. Modeling the Mobile User Experience by Bryan Rieger goes into explaining the parallels between animation (stop motion, 3D, claymation, etc) in the film and video industry and interaction design in the mobile industry.  The same learning can be applied to both interaction design and even information architecture in the web industry.

Having a background in film and video myself I have always sought out to adopt some of those practices from that industry into my web projects.  Here are some examples of those parallels: storyboards (screen states), scripts (usability testing scripts), models (sketches), animatics (annotated wireframes), layouts (comps), dope sheets (interaction timelines), shooting schedule (testing schedule), and project plan (resourcing schedule).  You get the picture.  We spend so much time trying to figure out how to communicate a new aspect of interaction or design that we often forget to look at older and more established models used by other industries.
